Inside the Mud Girls Studio: Stories of Healing, Growth, and Belonging

May 28, 2026 | Mud Girls

At Good Dirt Collective, young women impacted by foster care are discovering healing, confidence, and community through creativity, mentorship, and consistent care. Their voices tell the story best of what it means to be seen, supported, and slowly begin to believe in something different for themselves.

“I Feel Like I Can Finally Be Myself Here” — Finding Freedom Through Creativity

For many participants, the creative space becomes a place of freedom, where expression feels safe and identity can unfold without pressure.

“Mud Girls really help me express myself more,” says a participant. She shares how being in the studio has shifted something in her. She used to keep things inside and struggle to express how she felt, but now she feels more open and able to show who she really is.

“I just love being here because it just makes me so happy, and I’m just myself here,” she adds. In a world where many of these young women have had to adapt, perform, or stay guarded, creativity becomes a way back to themselves.

“Even on Hard Days, Someone Sees Me” — Sonia’s Story of Encouragement and Healing

Healing often begins in small and consistent moments, especially with words that affirm their worth on the most difficult days.

“There’s times where I feel like I’m not really doing good. And she’ll tell me, like, ‘Hey, you did a good job today.’ And that kind of makes me feel happy,” says Sonia, reflecting on how encouragement impacts her in real time. On days when she feels discouraged or unsure of herself, those small affirmations help shift how she sees her own progress.

Sonia shares, “There’s actually good people that love me out there.” This realization is significant for her. She used to feel like she was alone or not supported, but now she is beginning to believe that care and belonging are real and possible.

“I Didn’t Think My Life Could Get Better” — Michel’s Journey From Hopelessness to Possibility

Some stories begin in places where the future feels out of reach.

“Growing up, life seemed like it just didn’t get better… I felt really hopeless. I was like, I’m not gonna get far,” says Michel, honestly naming how heavy things felt early on. She used to see very limited possibilities for her future and struggled to imagine things changing.

I always thought that the people who were supposed to care for me didn’t… so I though why is anyone going to care?” She continues by sharing, “[Good Dirt Collective has] really, truly showed me a different perspective of life,” she continues. Over time, through consistent support and community, her outlook began to shift and new possibilities started to feel real.

What makes the difference is not just encouragement, but consistency.

“They have never given up on me,” says Michel. That steady presence has mattered deeply to her. She shares that even when things felt difficult, there were people who kept showing up for her. She used to expect people to leave or give up, but now she is learning what it feels like to be supported consistently.

“Who You’re Around Shapes Who You Become” — Angie on the Power of Community

Community also becomes a mirror for growth and change.

“It’s really important to surround yourself with those kind of people,” says Angie. She reflects on how the people around you can shape your mindset and direction in life. She used to be more influenced by environments that didn’t support her growth, but now she understands the importance of healthy connection and support systems.

“We’re Here to Give You Love That Lasts” — Christina on the Mission of Support

At its core, the mission is simple but profound: to offer love, support, and belonging that helps young women move toward stability and fulfillment.

“We’re going to give you that love and support to be able to live a life of true fulfillment,” says Christina. She emphasizes that this support is meant to be consistent and deeply rooted in care.

Hope does not always arrive all at once. Sometimes it begins quietly—in a studio, in a conversation, in a moment of being told, “you did a good job today.” And sometimes, hope begins with one light that helps everything else become visible.
