The Problem
Girls who have “aged-out” of the foster care system
are the most vulnerable in our society due to past trauma and lack of a real family. Young women in foster care, who reach the age of 18, are often forced to exit the foster care system without any support, community connection, or assistance. They are left to fend for themselves, which often leads to homelessness, becoming victims of sex trafficking, or a life of crime. Many of these individuals are desperate for reliable employment, but without having any ingrained job skills, are often left to rely on government assistance.

has launched an entrepreneurship program to fight the daunting realities stacked against Fresno’s aged-out foster girls. Our aim is to provide these valuable young women with opportunities to learn skills, marketing techniques, and business basics resulting in…
• Strengthening her economic resilience so she can avoid engaging in risky behaviors for survival
• Developing a sustainable skill set to aid her in future vocational success
This year-long program is designed to empower these vulnerable young women by teaching them the art and business of pottery. The program covers everything from the basics of pottery creation, production, and quality control to other basic business skills like marketing, customer service and selling their products. It also prioritizes nurturing their emotional and spiritual well-being helping them to grow both personally and professionally.

How Mud Girls Works
Good Dirt Collective seeks to restore hope and joy into the lives of foster youth in our community. This program teaches transitional-aged young women an artisan skill to project them onto a path of independence.
Pottery is the avenue through which they will learn the skills of craftsmanship as well as how to be a dependable employee. Working with clay is not only therapeutic but will also be the vessel used to help pull them out of a cycle of poverty by transforming the “good dirt” into functional and beautiful pieces to sell to the community.
Entrepreneur Program
6-Month Pottery Course
Includes slab work, pinch pots, coils, glazing, firing, production, and marketing
12-Month Paid Internship
Includes creating products for the Mud Girl line as well as designing and creating their own personal line of pottery products.
Exit Interview + Opportunities
Upon completing the 12-month program, there will be an exit interview with suggestions on moving forward and possibly a more permanent job opportunity.
